Gunmen Kill Bayelsa INEC Chief Simeon Akpeni

Simeon Akpeni, the executive secretary of the Bayelsa state Independent Electoral Commission (BYSIEC) was on Friday, October, 10, 2014 killed by unknown assailants, suspected to be gunmen.

The killing, according to a Vanguard report happened around 9 pm in front of Akpeni’s residence along Otiotio road. The victim was said to have been met by three armed men who opened fire on the electoral chief at point plank range, fatally shooting him in the head.

Reports say Akpeni had just come back from a business trip, attended a political meeting before going home. According to the reports, he received a phone call from someone who identified himself as an engineer, requesting for a meeting shortly before he was killed.

The late Akpeni reportedly left the house for the meeting but could not get through and decided to return home when he met his death as he alighted from his car in front of his house.

Bayelsa state commissioner of police,Valentine Ntomchukwu visited the family after the incident to pay his condolences, saying he felt it was a case of assassination as the assailants did not take any valuable from the scene of the crime after shooting him.

Bayelsa state police piblic relations officer, Alex Akhigbe confirmed the incident adding that police have begun investigation to get to the root of the matter.
