TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has declared a ceasefire, marking the end of the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel.
The announcement was broadcast in a national address on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, via the state-run IRNA news agency.
“Today, after the heroic resistance of our great nation, whose determination makes history, we are witnessing the establishment of a truce and the ending of this 12-day war imposed by the adventurism and provocation of Israel,” President Pezeshkian said.
The war, the most direct military confrontation to date between the two regional powers, had escalated rapidly following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites.
In retaliation, Iran launched a barrage of ballistic missiles into Israeli territory, including areas within the Arab-Israeli city of Tamra, where extensive damage to civilian infrastructure was reported.
A photograph taken in Tamra on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, showed the charred remains of a home struck by an Iranian missile earlier in the conflict, underscoring the destructive scale of the exchange.
Celebrations broke out in parts of the region following the announcement of the ceasefire.
In Basra, southern Iraq, demonstrators took to the streets waving Iranian flags.
One image captured an Iraqi man handing a flag to a young girl as part of the spontaneous street celebrations.
While the terms of the truce have not been publicly disclosed, regional observers note that the ceasefire followed several days of intense diplomatic mediation involving Gulf states and back-channel negotiations brokered with the help of international actors.
Both countries suffered significant casualties and infrastructure damage, and international humanitarian groups are calling for immediate access to assess civilian impact on both sides.
