Islamic scholars in Kano under the aegis, Council of Ulamas, have rejected castration as punishment for the crime of rape as proscribed by the state House of Assembly.
The motion proposing castration for confirmed rapists, which was sponsored by Nuraddeen Alhassan, was adopted by the house on July 15, 2020.
The Islamic group in a statement released by the chairman, Sheil Ibrahim Khalil on Tuesday, July 28, 2020 kicked against castration stating it is against their religion.
The Islamic scholars advised the assembly to refer to Old Kano Sharia Law, which states the punishment for rapists.
They noted that there is stated punishment in the law for rape offenders and adulterers, which are all major sins in Islam.
The group also disclosed they will the assembly for further talks with the members.
