GAZA, Palestine — Seven people, including five Al Jazeera journalists, were killed late Sunday, August 10, 2025, in an Israeli air strike outside the main gate of al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, according to the Qatar-based network.
Al Jazeera said the attack was targeted, identifying the dead journalists as reporter Anas al-Sharif, correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh, and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed that al-Sharif had been targeted, alleging he was “the head of a Hamas terrorist cell.”
Al Jazeera rejected the claim, calling the killings “a desperate attempt to silence the voices exposing the impending seizure and occupation of Gaza.”
Al-Sharif, a prominent war correspondent, lost his father when Israeli strikes hit his family home in the Jabalia refugee camp in 2024.
He had repeatedly spoken of fearing for his life, accusing the Israeli military of targeting him.
In a message dated April 6 and intended for release upon his death, al-Sharif wrote that he had “lived the pain in all its details” and “tasted grief and loss repeatedly.”
He expressed sorrow at leaving behind his wife, Bayan, and at not seeing his children, Salah and Sham, grow up.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the strike, saying Israel had not provided evidence to substantiate its allegations against al-Sharif.
“Journalists are civilians and must never be targeted. Those responsible for these killings must be held accountable,” CPJ said.
Since the start of the Israel–Gaza war in October 2023, CPJ says 186 journalists have been killed, at least 178 of them Palestinian.
