ABUJA, Nigeria — The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has begun an urgent review of its 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) process, following an outpouring of complaints from candidates about irregularities in their released results.
In a statement issued Monday, May 12, 2025, JAMB acknowledged receiving an “unusual volume” of score-related complaints and announced the acceleration of its annual system review, which typically occurs months after the examination cycle.
The review will span all three phases of the UTME process — registration, examination, and result release — and will involve external experts, including members of the Computer Professionals Association of Nigeria, chief external examiners from tertiary institutions, and representatives from the Educational Association and Research Network in Africa.
The move comes amid growing unrest among candidates and their families. Since the release of the 2025 UTME results last Friday, thousands have taken to social media to voice concerns, with some rejecting their results outright and alleging that technical glitches marred their examination experience.
JAMB’s spokesperson, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said while the board maintains that the published results accurately reflect candidates’ performances, it remains open to reviewing verified complaints.
“Should any technical issues be identified, appropriate remedial measures will be implemented promptly,” the statement read.
Over 8,000 formal complaints have reportedly been submitted by candidates citing system errors during the examination.
JAMB noted that in instances where genuine technical issues occurred, it has historically rescheduled exams to ensure fairness.
According to JAMB, the 2025 results show that more than 78 per cent of candidates scored below 200 points out of a possible 400, sparking national concern about both student performance and the integrity of the testing process.
The board has urged the public to remain calm while the investigation is underway.
“We ask for patience and understanding as we conduct a comprehensive and transparent review,” JAMB stated.
