Kaduna Government to Refund Buyers of Legacy School Properties Sold by El-Rufai

KADUNA, Nigeria — The Kaduna State Government has announced the commencement of refunds to individuals who purchased houses and landed properties within Queen Amina College, Alhuda-Huda College, and Government Commercial College Zaria — properties that were sold under the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.

The refunds, according to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr AbdulKadir Mu’azu Meyere, will begin on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the Secretariat of the Sale of Non-Essential Government Houses, located at Hassan Usman Katsina House, Kawo, Kaduna.

The development follows Governor Uba Sani’s revocation of the sales in April, citing “overriding public interest” and a commitment to restoring the schools to their original purpose.

Kaduna State Government had pledged that steps were being taken to refund amounts paid in respect of the sold houses, as directed by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Kaduna State,” Meyere said.

Beneficiaries seeking a refund are required to present the following documentation:

  • Evidence of payment for the property

  • Valid means of identification (such as voter’s card or national ID card)

  • Bank details, including the bank name, account number, and Bank Verification Number (BVN) slip

  • A recent bank statement

  • Two passport-sized photographs

Meyere reiterated that the current administration is committed to creating a conducive learning environment within public institutions and advancing Human Capital Development.

“Kaduna State Government wishes to reiterate its commitment to make the atmosphere within and around schools conducive for learning,” he stated.

The properties were part of a broader policy under former Governor El-Rufai to sell non-essential government assets, including sections of historically significant public schools.

The sales had drawn criticism from education advocates and civil society groups who argued that the encroachment on school grounds undermined public education and access to learning spaces.
