KADUNA, Nigeria — The Kaduna State Police Command has identified the man who breached security protocol during President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to the state as Umar Mohammed, describing him as a person with a long-standing psychiatric condition.
The incident occurred during President Tinubu’s speech at Murtala Square in Kaduna, where he was inaugurating multiple projects executed by Governor Uba Sani’s administration.
Mohammed, who was part of the crowd, unexpectedly attempted to approach the president before being quickly restrained by security personnel.
President Tinubu, in a moment captured on video, was heard instructing his security detail to “leave him alone.”
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 19, 2025, the police spokesperson in Kaduna, Mansir Hassan, clarified that Mohammed was not a security threat and had been screened before entering the venue.
“The individual in question is one Umar Mohammed, a native of Anguwan Muazu in Kaduna. He was born with psychiatric disorders; he is of unsound mind,” the statement read.
“He is an ardent supporter of Mr. President and the Governor according to our findings. Nevertheless, he was screened and admitted into the stadium as an APC supporter, wearing the standard campaign T-shirt and carrying banners bearing the images of the President and the Governor.”
Hassan explained that Mohammed had been positioned among other party supporters but suddenly breached the security perimeter “out of curiosity and excitement to catch a closer look at the President.”
“On interrogation, he stated that he acted out of anxiety and emotional excitement, expressing a long-held desire to meet with the Governor and the President,” the statement added.
The police further clarified that no dangerous or incriminating items were found on Mohammed, and that his behaviour stemmed from a mental health condition, not a calculated threat.
Meanwhile, Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, addressed the viral video footage of the incident, which has circulated on social media platforms.
He claimed the video had been “doctored to distort the true nature of the incident for political gain.”
Muhammad issued a warning to those sharing misleading narratives, stating that politicising security matters could have serious consequences.
“The matter is under investigation, and those spreading falsehoods will be invited for questioning and will be prosecuted if found culpable,” he said.
