LONDON, United Kingdom — Kanye West, also known as Ye, has been blocked from entering Britain, forcing the cancellation of the Wireless Festival where he had been scheduled to headline, organisers said on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, following mounting backlash over his antisemitic statements and music.
Festival Republic, a division of Live Nation, said the U.K. government had withdrawn Ye’s electronic travel authorisation, effectively denying him entry into the country.
“The Home Office has withdrawn YE’s ETA, denying him entry into the United Kingdom,” the organisers said in a statement.
“As a result, Wireless Festival is cancelled and refunds will be issued to all ticket holders.”
Government Intervention Follows Mounting Pressure
The decision came after days of growing political and public pressure on British authorities to bar the artist from performing.
Critics had urged organisers to drop Ye from the festival lineup, citing a pattern of inflammatory remarks and behaviour.
A source within the British government said ministers had been reviewing whether to allow Ye into the country, while several major sponsors, including Pepsi, distanced themselves from the event.
The Home Office did not immediately comment publicly, though British media, including the BBC, reported that the decision to block entry had been finalised.
Controversy Over Antisemitic Remarks
The cancellation marks one of the most significant consequences yet of Ye’s recent controversies, which have included antisemitic social media posts, the sale of merchandise featuring a swastika, and the release of a song titled “Heil Hitler.”
The festival organisers acknowledged the seriousness of the issue in their statement, saying that “antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent” and recognising the “real and personal impact” of such actions.
Ye Responds, Offers Outreach
Hours before the cancellation was confirmed, Ye issued a statement addressing the controversy and signalling a willingness to engage with the Jewish community in Britain.
“My only goal is to come to London and present a show of change, bringing unity, peace, and love through my music,” he said.
“I would be grateful for the opportunity to meet with members of the Jewish community in the U.K. in person, to listen.”
He added that he understood that words alone would not be sufficient, saying he would need to demonstrate change through his actions.
Community Leaders Remain Sceptical
The Board of Deputies of British Jews responded cautiously, saying the Jewish community would need to see “genuine remorse and change” before accepting such gestures.
Its president, Phil Rosenberg, said any meeting with Ye should take place only after he agreed not to perform at the festival.
Political Backlash Intensifies
Senior British politicians had also voiced strong opposition to Ye’s appearance.
Wes Streeting, a senior figure in the governing Labour Party, said Ye “has no business” headlining the festival and criticised organisers for what he described as a “terrible error of judgement.”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer had earlier expressed disapproval of the decision to book the rapper.
Organisers Defend Initial Booking
Festival Republic’s managing director, Melvin Benn, had previously defended the decision to invite Ye, arguing that the artist should be afforded “forgiveness” and noting that his music continues to reach millions through mainstream platforms.
The organisers said that multiple stakeholders had been consulted before confirming Ye as headliner and that no objections were raised at the time.
The swift reversal, however, underscores the scale of the backlash and the growing willingness of governments and institutions to intervene when public controversy intersects with major cultural events.
