ABUJA, Nigeria — In a development that has sparked intense speculation across Nigeria’s political landscape, the factional National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has held a closed-door meeting with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in Abuja.
The meeting, which reportedly took place at Wike’s residence in Abuja, was not accompanied by any official statement from either party.
However, political observers believe the encounter signals potential manoeuvrings ahead of the 2027 general elections or a looming political realignment.
Both men hail from rival political platforms — Wike, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Abure, the embattled leader of a faction of the Labour Party.
Both parties are currently engulfed in internal crises following the fallout from the 2023 general elections.
The PDP has yet to recover from the schism triggered by Wike’s G-5 rebellion, which weakened the party’s cohesion during the presidential race.
Meanwhile, the Labour Party remains fractured, with Julius Abure’s leadership contested internally and in the courts, even as key figures like Peter Obi have distanced themselves from party affairs.
The fractures in both parties have led to a flurry of defections.
Several prominent members from both the PDP and LP have crossed over to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), while others have adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their new political base.
When contacted, a spokesman for the FCT Minister declined to comment on the meeting, describing it as “a private courtesy visit.”
Likewise, Labour Party officials loyal to Abure offered no confirmation on the purpose of the engagement.
