DAKAR, Senegal — Omar Sy, the French actor with Senegalese roots, has been selected to serve as an ambassador for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, organisers announced.
His appointment places a prominent entertainment figure at the centre of preparations for the first Olympic competition scheduled to take place on the African continent from 31 October to 13 November 2026.
The announcement was made on Monday, December 29, 2025.

Sy, known internationally for his work in cinema and television, expressed enthusiasm about the role.
“I am proud and honoured to be an ambassador for the Youth Olympic Games that will take place in 2026 in Senegal. These Games represent values that are close to my heart – sharing, solidarity, pushing beyond one’s limits, and intercultural encounters,” he said.
He added that the gathering carries particular meaning for him. “Seeing the youth of Senegal and the entire world shine together on the land of Teranga is a powerful symbol of unity and hope.”
Background and Connection to Senegal
Omar Sy, 47, was born in France to a Senegalese father and has maintained longstanding personal and professional ties to Senegal.
His connection has been reflected in roles in films such as Yao (2018) and Father & Soldier (Tirailleurs) (2022). In January 2025, he met with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, underscoring his ongoing engagement with the country and its youth.
Sy first rose to wide recognition through The Intouchables in 2011 and later reached a global streaming audience through the Netflix series Lupin.
Engagement with Youth and Sport
Beyond acting, Sy has taken part in initiatives related to young people and sport.
He has been involved in activities linked to major sporting events, including attendance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and has supported youth-focused causes.
He has also joined the board of Paris Basketball as a co-owner.
Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games
The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will bring together approximately 2,700 athletes under the age of 18.
Competitions are due to be held across Dakar, Saly, and Diamniadio in 35 sports.
The event is intended to combine sporting contests with educational and cultural activities.
As ambassador, Sy is expected to help promote the Games and the Olympic values associated with them, including excellence, respect, and friendship.
The Dakar edition will mark the first time an Olympic event is staged in Africa.
