LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive traffic diversion plan to facilitate the emergency rehabilitation of the Oworonshoki Bridge, a major artery connecting mainland Lagos to Victoria Island via the Third Mainland Bridge.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, April 30, 2025, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, the state Commissioner for Transportation, said the repairs would commence on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, and proceed in eight phases, concluding on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Phases One to Four (May 6 – July 14):
The first set of repairs will focus on the inbound lane of the Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge towards the Third Mainland Bridge.
“Motorists heading to Oshodi or Victoria Island through the Oworonshoki/Third Axial Bridge will be diverted 50 metres before the work zone and reconnected 50 metres past it,” Osiyemi explained.
Alternate routes for affected motorists include:
-
Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to Victoria Island: Divert via Ojota Slip Road → Ikorodu Road → Anthony → Taxi Park ramp to Oshodi.
-
Anthony via Town Planning Way to Gbagada, then link to Third Mainland Bridge.
-
Mowe and environs: Use Ojota Slip Road → Ikorodu Road → Funsho Williams Avenue → Eko Bridge to Victoria Island.
-
Ikeja to Victoria Island: Route through Maryland → Ikorodu Road → Funsho Williams Avenue → Outer Marina.
-
Ikeja to Oshodi: Via Maryland/Ikorodu Road → Anthony → Taxi Park ramp to Oshodi.
Phases Five to Eight (July 15 – September 23):
The second half of the repairs will shift to the outbound lane, heading away from the Third Mainland Bridge.
Motorists heading from Victoria Island to Ikorodu/Ketu/Alapere or Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will be rerouted as follows:
-
Eko Bridge → Funsho Williams Avenue → Ikorodu Road → Ojota/Ketu/Abiola Garden Ramp.
“The diversion routes have been carefully mapped out to reduce congestion, and Lagosians are encouraged to cooperate with traffic officials,” Osiyemi stated.
The Commissioner assured that traffic signage and enforcement personnel will be deployed throughout the duration of the rehabilitation to ensure a seamless transition through the diversions.
The Oworonshoki Bridge is a crucial link for commuters navigating between Lagos Mainland and Island, and the government urged motorists to plan their routes accordingly during the repair period.
