Man Arraigned for Allegedly Threatening Osun Governor Adeleke

IBADAN, Nigeria — A 32-year-old man, Rasaq Gafar, was on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, arraigned before an Iyaganku Chief Magistrates’ Court in Ibadan for allegedly issuing death threats against Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State via social media.

Gafar was charged with three counts: threat to kill, threat to life, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The prosecution, led by Matthew Ojei, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Saturday, July 12, 2025 in Ibadan.

Ojei alleged that Gafar used his social media accounts to transmit threatening messages aimed at the governor, adding that the conduct was capable of inciting public disturbance.

The charges were filed under Sections 249(D) and 323 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

Defence counsel, Marvelous Ojeleye, urged the court to grant Gafar bail “on the most liberal terms.”

Chief Magistrate Olabisi Ogunkanmi granted bail in the sum of ₦2.5 million, with two sureties in like sum.

One surety must own a landed property, and the other must be a blood relation of the defendant.

The case was adjourned to Thursday, November 13, 2025 for hearing.
