LAGOS, Nigeria — A 43-year-old man, Pere Faruk, has died by suicide after allegedly pouring acid on his girlfriend, Kemi Bashiru, during a violent domestic altercation on Lagos Island.
The incident reportedly occurred around 5:40 p.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025, at No. 8 Messy Street, Lagos Island.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Faruk’s younger brother, Pere Jeli, who lives nearby on Igbosere Street, was alerted by neighbours and raised the alarm.
Bashiru, the victim, suffered severe chemical burns and was immediately rushed to Lagos Island General Hospital, where she remains in critical condition and is undergoing intensive treatment.
Shortly after the attack, Faruk was found unresponsive in his room.
A bottle of Sniper insecticide was discovered beside him, indicating he had ingested the substance.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, and his remains have since been deposited at a public mortuary for autopsy.
The Lagos State Police Command has launched an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the tragic events.
