He was laid to rest on February 3, 2015 at his hometown in Umudioka, Anambra State.

The late actor’s step sister opened up in an interview about his illness and factors surrounding his death.

She revealed that Obiekwe’s kidney failure was triggered by High Blood Pressure possibly caused by work stress.

According to her, Obiekwe’s family was already making plans for a kidney transplant – “his uncles were to come to Nigeria to operate on him”. Unfortunately, that did not happen as both of his kidneys failed and he died before the operation.

Also speaking on why Obiekwe kept his sickness a secret, she stated that the actor was a very private person who preferred to handle his personal issues away from the public eye.

About people who claimed the actor never said anything about his health or solicited for help, Chinwe had nothing but hatred and harsh words for them.

She said, “Fuck them”.

“Assuming he said he was sick, they would have helped. Did they come to contribute to his burial? “Did I they come to know how far the family is moving on,” she added.
