ABUJA, Nigeria — A woman identified as Esther has died after visiting her boyfriend in the Dei-Dei area of Abuja, residents said, in an incident that police in the Federal Capital Territory confirmed they were investigating.
A resident of the area who identified himself as Dauda said Esther left home on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, telling her sister that she was going to a bank in Dei-Dei.
Dauda said she did not return home, and that later that night her elder brother received what he described as an anonymous phone call from a man who identified himself as Esther’s boyfriend.
According to Dauda, the caller told the family that Esther had visited him at his residence and that he bought food for her.
Dauda said the caller claimed that Esther began vomiting after eating the meal and that he took her to Kubwa General Hospital.
Dauda said Esther died while receiving treatment at the hospital.
He added that the boyfriend did not give his name or address and that, since the call, the man’s phone number had been switched off, along with Esther’s phone number.
When contacted on Friday, the Federal Capital Territory Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, said the police were aware of the incident and were investigating.
“We are aware of the incident and we are investigating,” she said.
