ABUJA, Nigeria — The federal government has declared Wednesday, October 1, 2025, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary.
Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior, made the announcement on Monday, September 29, 2025, in a statement signed by Magdalene Ajani, permanent secretary in the ministry.
Congratulating Nigerians on what he described as a “historic milestone,” Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to uphold the values of patriotism, unity, and resilience, which he said have sustained the country since it gained independence in 1960.
He also called on Nigerians to continue supporting President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, which he said was focused on national rebirth, economic growth, and shared prosperity.
“With collective effort, Nigeria will continue to advance in peace, progress, and development,” the minister said.
Nigeria marks 65 years since the lowering of the Union Jack on October 1, 1960.
The anniversary comes at a time of significant political, social, and economic challenges, with the government urging citizens to reflect on the nation’s journey and contribute to building a stronger federation.
Tunji-Ojo concluded his message by wishing Nigerians a happy and memorable Independence Day celebration.
