ABEOKUTA, Nigeria — The Ogun State government on Monday, December 29, 2025, offered condolences to the families of those killed in a traffic crash on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway that involved world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, after officials said two people died in the incident.
The accident occurred within the Makun area of Ogun State as Joshua and three others were travelling from Lagos to Sagamu, according to a statement issued in Abeokuta by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Officials said two men described as foreign nationals were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were taken to a morgue in Sagamu.
Joshua and the driver were taken to hospital after being rescued by security personnel assigned to his convoy, the statement said.
Government expresses sympathy and urges caution
Akinmade said the state regarded the crash as a painful event that resulted in loss of life and injuries. He stated that those receiving treatment had been taken to hospital following the crash.
Quoting the government’s message, Akinmade said, “The Ogun State government describes the incident as deeply unfortunate and painful, particularly with the loss of precious lives, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries and are receiving medical care.”
He added that the government extended sympathy to the bereaved families, saying, “Our hearts go out to the bereaved families who lost their loved ones in this tragic incident, which the state considers a devastating loss.
“As we mourn collectively, we pray for the repose of the souls of the departed and for the speedy recovery of the injured.
“May Almighty God grant the families left behind the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”
Akinmade appealed to motorists to obey traffic rules and exercise caution during periods of heavy travel, and called on road safety and security agencies to strengthen patrols and enforcement across the state.
Road safety agency confirms incident and preliminary cause
The Federal Road Safety Corps also confirmed the crash.
Afolabi Odunsi, Public Education Officer of the Corps in Ogun State, said in a statement in Abeokuta that the incident occurred at noon on Monday.
Odunsi said early indications suggested speeding and improper overtaking led to a collision with a stationary vehicle.
