Pat Utomi Bows Out of Politics, Pledges to Shun Appointments and Contracts

LAGOS, Nigeria — Professor Pat Utomi, a respected scholar of political economy and a prominent figure in Nigeria’s public discourse, has announced his withdrawal from partisan politics and any form of government appointment, declaring a new chapter focused solely on civic advocacy and the future of Nigerian youth.

Speaking during a live interview on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television on Friday, May 9, 2025, Utomi stated unequivocally that he would no longer seek elected office or accept contracts or appointments from the Nigerian government.

“Let me state clearly: I will not run for public office, I will not accept an appointment, contract by any government in Nigeria,” Utomi said.

“My only concern is the well-being of the next generation.”

Utomi, who has long been associated with reformist ideals and has contested for high political office in the past, explained that the decision was based on principle and a desire to distance himself from what he described as a culture of suspicion surrounding public service motives in Nigeria.

“I have lived my life decently without government money or stealing anybody’s thing,” he said.

“I want to take that away from people who talk nonsense like, ‘Oh, he is looking for a contract’.”

During the interview, the former presidential aspirant also spoke about the idea of a “shadow government,” a model he believes could strengthen Nigeria’s democracy by allowing civic groups and concerned citizens to monitor and critique government actions.

He described the initiative as a “democratic mechanism for citizens to hold elected leaders accountable,” underscoring his shift from direct political participation to civil oversight and public engagement.

Utomi’s announcement comes at a time of growing public dissatisfaction with Nigeria’s political class and a widening generational divide in visions for the country’s future.

While Utomi gave no further details about any formal initiatives under the “shadow government” banner, his comments suggest an enduring commitment to influencing national development from outside the corridors of power.
