ABUJA, Nigeria — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has cautioned its members against endorsing President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general election, describing such actions as a violation of the party’s constitution and a threat to its stability.
In a statement on Friday, August 8, 2025, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba said recent public endorsements of Tinubu by some prominent members amounted to anti-party activities.
Among those who have openly backed the president’s re-election bid are Nyesom Wike, minister of the federal capital territory; Ayodele Fayose, former governor of Ekiti State; and the Osun State caucus of the PDP.
“Of serious concern is the persistent public media outbursts against our Party by some prominent members whose actions and utterances including their public declaration of support and willingness to work for the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 Presidential election… constitute a serious threat to the stability and sustenance of our Party,” Mr Ologunagba said.
Citing section 10(6) of the PDP constitution, which prohibits members from undermining the party, he warned that such behaviour has caused “division, disaffection and heavy haemorrhaging of members” and could harm the party’s electoral prospects if left unchecked.
“In the light of the foregoing… the NWC, pursuant to the provisions of Section 59(1) of the PDP Constitution hereby issues a strong reprimand against such anti-party activities and cautions those involved to retrace their steps or face stiffer sanctions,” the statement read.
Mr Ologunagba urged members to remain loyal and focused on the PDP’s preparations for its national convention in November, calling on them to “work assiduously” for the party’s success.
