At the 2013 State of the Union address, Michelle Obama caught some flak for wearing a sparkly red sleeveless dress that some said looked more suited for a “cocktail party.”
So this Tuesday night, at the 2014 State of the Union, the first lady made a more conservative pick: a forest green Azzedine Alaia ensemble complete with a full-skirted dress, oversized belt and swingy cropped jacket.
Mrs. O has worn Alaia often throughout her husband’s two terms, including a terracotta drop-waist dress at a 2011 visit to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington D.C. and a long powder blue gown at the Nobel Peace prize banquet in Oslo in 2009. But the decision to eschew an American designer for the State of the Union — when in years past she’s worn American names like Barbara Tfank, Rachel Roy and Jason Wu — is a little surprising.
On the other hand, wearing an Alaia gives FLOTUS a chance to utter that famous “Clueless” line.
