Apparently Seth Meyers has fans in high places. Besides Lorne Michaels, that is.
Two months into his new gig as Jimmy Fallon‘s replacement on Late Night, Meyers has been tapped to host the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards, airing live on NBC on Aug. 25 from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre.
Of course, this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody. Meyers did say he was “ready to play ball,” wink-wink, while presenting at the Golden Globes this past January. Surely that offer extended to the Television Academy, which announced the news Thursday, as well!
“Seth’s expertise and ease in front of a live audience during his time at SNL, as well as his comedic brilliance both as a writer and in front of the camera on SNL and Late Night, makes him the perfect choice to host the Emmys,” said NBC exec Paul Telgedy. “Plus, with Don’s vast experience at putting these type of big productions together, we’ll be in great hands.”
Don Mischer will serve as executive producer.
Meyers will be following in the footsteps of Late Night predecessors and past Emmy hosts Jimmy Fallon, Conan O’Brien and David Letterman when he dons his tux on the big night—which, in a change of past, falls on a Monday this year.
Before taking the reins of NBC’s Late Night at the end of February, Meyers spent 13 years on SNL, eight of them as a head writer—so we know the 40-year-old entertainer can crack wise with the best of them.
