LIVERPOOL, England — Celebrations turned to chaos on Monday, May 26, 2025, in Liverpool after a car ploughed into a crowd during the city’s parade marking the club’s Premier League title victory, injuring several people.
Merseyside Police confirmed the incident, which occurred just after 6:00 p.m. local time (1700 GMT), stating that they were called to the scene following reports that a vehicle had collided with multiple pedestrians.
The force said the driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and had been detained.
“The car stopped at the scene and a male has been detained,” police said in a statement.
“Emergency services remain in the area and cordons are in place.”
An AFP journalist at the scene reported seeing at least four individuals carried away on stretchers.
North West Ambulance Service said it was working with other emergency services to assess the situation and deliver medical assistance.
“Our priority is to ensure people receive the medical help they need as quickly as possible,” the service said.
Social media videos showed a dark-coloured vehicle veering into a dense crowd of supporters, just moments after Liverpool players had completed their open-top bus tour through the city.
Screams and confusion followed as bystanders rushed to help those injured.
Police officers quickly moved in to secure the area.
The exact number of injuries and the severity of those injuries are yet to be confirmed.
Authorities have not released details about the motive behind the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
The parade, which drew tens of thousands of fans, marked Liverpool’s return to the top of English football.
The event had otherwise been peaceful and jubilant until the incident occurred near the end of the route.
Emergency services, including paramedics and a fire engine, remained at the scene late into the evening, while parts of the city centre were cordoned off.
Merseyside Police have urged the public to avoid the affected area as investigations continue.
