ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has once again showered praise on Nigeria’s Super Falcons following their thrilling 3–2 victory over Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), describing the team’s performance as “historic” and “inspirational.”
During a video call with the players on Sunday, July 27, 2025, Tinubu commended the team’s resilience and fighting spirit, which saw them come from two goals down to clinch a record-extending 10th continental title in front of a home crowd in Rabat.
“I am very, very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you,” the president said.
“You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your generation and we are all very happy.”
The president assured the team of a grand reception upon their return to Nigeria, stating that he “eagerly looks forward to receiving the trophy in Abuja.”
Tinubu singled out several players for praise, including captain Rasheedat Ajibade for her leadership and standout performance, and Esther Okoronkwo for what he called a “very courageous” penalty that ignited the team’s second-half comeback.
Okoronkwo, who scored the opening goal in the 64th minute, also assisted the equaliser and delivered the decisive free-kick that led to Jennifer Echegini’s winning goal in the 88th minute.
“Safe journey home. Enjoy yourselves, avoid injuries, and God bless you,” Tinubu added, prompting a chorus of “Thank you, Mr. President!” from the jubilant players.
Captain Ajibade, speaking on behalf of the squad, expressed appreciation for the president’s support and his approval of full payment of players’ allowances.
She said the team was eager to present the WAFCON trophy to him in Abuja.
The president had earlier issued a statement congratulating the Falcons on their “spectacular performance and resilience,” saying the team “has achieved the mission the nation dreamed of and prayed for.”
