ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant reduction in the cost of kidney dialysis sessions in federal hospitals nationwide, slashing the price from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000.

The development was disclosed on Monday, August 18, 2025, by Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to the President on Policy Information, via his official X handle.

According to Bwala, the subsidy is already in effect across key federal medical centres and teaching hospitals in the six geopolitical zones.

The institutions implementing the subsidy include:

  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Ebute-Metta, Lagos

  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja

  • University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan

  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri

  • University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri

  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta

  • Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos

  • Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Azare

  • University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin

  • University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar

Bwala added that more federal hospitals would be added before the end of 2025 to expand nationwide access.

The announcement comes on the heels of another presidential directive approving free caesarean sections (C-sections) in federal hospitals.

The measure is aimed at reducing maternal deaths and improving access to emergency maternal care.

Bwala described the dialysis subsidy and maternal health policy as part of Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that: “Together, these measures demonstrate the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda in action—ensuring that no Nigerian is denied healthcare because of cost.”
