TOKYO, Japan — Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan secured a silver medal in the women’s 100-metre hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo on Monday, September 15, 2025, narrowly missing out on retaining her world title.
Amusan, the world record holder in the event, clocked 12.29 seconds to finish behind Switzerland’s Ditaj Kambundji, who stormed to gold in 12.24 seconds — a new Swiss national record. Grace Stark of the United States claimed bronze in 12.34 seconds.
The medal is Nigeria’s first at the ongoing championships and adds to Amusan’s reputation as one of the country’s most consistent performers on the global stage.
The 27-year-old Amusan overcame a slow start to claw her way back into contention, drawing level with Kambundji before the Swiss hurdler edged ahead at the finish line to clinch a dramatic victory.
The result stunned spectators as Kambundji upset a field packed with world-class talent.
Elsewhere at the championships, Nigeria’s Ezekiel Nathaniel advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s 400m hurdles after winning heat five in 48.37 seconds.
In the men’s long jump, Charles Edward Godfred bowed out after his best leap of 7.79 metres fell short of the qualifying mark for the final.
