LAGOS, Nigeria — Tonto Dikeh, a prominent Nollywood actress, has publicly recounted her struggles with smoking, alcohol addiction and masturbation, describing them as long-running battles that she said were broken through prayer and divine intervention.
Dikeh shared the testimony during a Sunday service at Streams of Joy International Church in Lagos, where she spoke at the New Season Prophetic Prayers and Declarations service led by the church’s founder, Jerry Eze.
A video of the testimony has since circulated widely on social media.
Standing before the congregation, Dikeh said she began smoking at the age of 13 and later developed dependencies on alcohol and masturbation, struggles she described as deeply entrenched and spiritually oppressive.
“I smoked since I was 13. God healed me from masturbation, too. I have known myself to have sexual intercourse in the dream ever since I was a child,” she said.
She described her appearance at the altar as both an act of thanksgiving and a personal testimony, adding that she almost decided not to speak publicly out of concern for her reputation.
“The devil tried to tell me that I was supposed to protect my image. But I told myself, what image? The God that gave me the image is the same God that can take it away,” she said.
Dikeh said a turning point came after she attended the Ghana Prayer Conference, where she said she experienced a spiritual breakthrough that ended years of what she described as captivity.
“I realised that the weak man who held me captive all my years in my dream ran away,” she said, describing the experience as a moment of release that marked a new chapter in her life.
The actress also spoke about struggling with intense anger, which she said previously affected her relationships and personal wellbeing.
“An anger that destroyed my life. Everybody had to feel it. But praying with NSPPD, God took all of those away and gave me peace,” she said.
She told the congregation that the sense of calm she now experiences was entirely new to her.
“I am 40 years old, and I can tell you I have never known peace until now. I am living in it,” she said.
Dikeh said her smoking habit lasted for approximately 27 years, beginning in childhood after being exposed to the practice at home.
She used the opportunity to caution parents about the influence their habits can have on children.
“I started smoking because my dad was a smoker. Something as little as that habit can inhabit the lives of your children,” she said.
According to her, the cravings for cigarettes and alcohol disappeared after she prayed for divine intervention.
“My body does not ask for it. My body is repelling it. Today, it is broken,” she said.
