Trump Condemns Palestinian Recognition, Dismisses Climate Change as ‘Con Job’ at UN

NEW YORK, USA — United States President Donald Trump used his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, to unleash a wide-ranging critique of the global body and its member states, striking combative tones on migration, climate change, and the war in Ukraine.

Speaking for nearly an hour, far beyond his allotted 15 minutes, Trump portrayed the UN as ineffective and accused it of undermining Western countries by supporting migration policies he claimed were harmful.

“What is the purpose of the United Nations?” Trump asked.

“It’s not even coming close to living up to its potential. It’s empty words, and empty words don’t solve wars.”

Trump opened his remarks with anecdotes about technical difficulties on his way into the building.

He complained that the teleprompter was malfunctioning and that the escalator he and First Lady Melania Trump rode had suddenly stopped.

“These are the two things I got from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter,” he said, adding that if Melania was not in “great shape”, she might have fallen.

“Whoever is operating this teleprompter is in big trouble.”

Turning to global conflicts, Trump argued that the war in Ukraine should have been easier to resolve due to his “good” relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

He described the invasion as “supposed to be a quick little skirmish,” saying its protracted length “makes Moscow look bad, not good.”

But Trump placed much of the blame on European governments, accusing some NATO countries of “funding the war against themselves” by continuing to purchase Russian energy.

“They have to immediately cease all energy purchases from Russia. Otherwise, we’re all wasting a lot of time,” he said.

Trump warned that the United States was prepared to impose “a very strong round of powerful tariffs” on Russia if it did not move towards a deal, urging European nations to adopt the same measures.

The president condemned recent moves by the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia to recognise Palestine as a state, saying the decision “would be a reward” for Hamas’s actions.

He reiterated his role in seeking a ceasefire in Gaza and delivered a pointed appeal: “Release the hostages now.”

The line drew applause from delegates.

Trump dismissed global climate science, labelling climate change the “greatest con job ever perpetrated in the world.”

He ridiculed predictions as “wrong” and made by “stupid people.”

“The primary effect of these brutal green energy policies has not been to help the environment but to redistribute manufacturing and industrial activity from developed countries that follow the insane rules,” he said.

Trump instead championed “energy dominance” through oil, gas, coal, and nuclear power.

His remarks prompted audible gasps in the assembly hall.

Immigration was another central theme, with Trump urging European nations to replicate his administration’s approach of detention and deportation.

“Once we started detaining and deporting everyone who crossed the border — and removing illegal aliens from the United States — they simply stopped coming,” he said.

By contrast, he claimed, “Europe is in serious trouble” because leaders were being “politically correct” and “destroying your heritage.”

As he left the podium, Trump insisted his remarks had been “well received.”
