UNILAG Bans Unauthorised Filming and Skitmaking on Campus

LAGOS, Nigeria — The University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has prohibited the unauthorised use of its campus facilities, including hostels, classrooms, and open spaces, for video production by skitmakers, filmmakers, and content creators.

In a statement released on Thursday, October 23, 2025,  and signed by the university’s Head of Communication, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the management expressed concern over what it described as the “increasing use” of its premises for shooting films, skits, and other visual content without proper approval.

“The attention of the University of Lagos Management has been drawn to the increasing use of the University premises, including hostels and other facilities, for shooting of films/videos (skits, vox pop, etc.) and cinematographic activities, without appropriate authorisation,” the statement read.

The university said the new restrictions aim to preserve its academic environment, maintain decorum, and safeguard the institution’s image from potential misrepresentation in unregulated productions.

UNILAG noted that it has established formal procedures for obtaining permission to conduct any form of video recording or creative work on campus.

According to the directive, individuals — whether students, staff, or external collaborators — must first seek approval from the university’s Communications Unit before filming.

“Members of the University community and general public are therefore advised to comply strictly with this directive in the interest of order, safety, and collective responsibility,” the statement added.

While acknowledging the growing influence of digital media and content creation among Nigerian youths, the university emphasised that creative expression must be balanced with institutional discipline and respect for its learning environment.

The management also underscored that the directive does not intend to stifle creativity but to ensure that all activities conducted on campus reflect UNILAG’s values and standards.

The move follows a nationwide trend among universities seeking to regulate the use of their campuses as settings for social media content and entertainment productions.

UNILAG has long been associated with Nigeria’s creative scene, having produced several of the country’s most popular skitmakers, including Muhammed Gilmore, who earned a degree in Chemistry in January 2024, and Chukwuebuka Amuzie, known widely as Brain Jotter, who graduated last year.

With this latest policy, the institution joins a growing list of Nigerian universities tightening control over campus-based media activities to maintain order and protect institutional integrity.
