WASHINGTON, USA — The United States Department of State has approved a possible $346 million sale of precision bombs, rockets, and ammunition to Nigeria, aimed at bolstering the country’s counterterrorism and maritime security capabilities.

In a statement on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said Nigeria requested 1,002 MK-82 general purpose 500 lb bombs, 1,002 MXU-650 Air Foil Groups, 5,000 Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System II high-explosive warheads with MK66-4 rocket motors, and other munitions.

The package also includes bomb fuzes, components, impulse cartridges, high-explosive and practice rockets, integration support, test equipment, and US government and contractor technical assistance.

Lockheed Martin, RTX Missiles and Defence, and BAE Systems are listed as the principal contractors.

The DSCA noted the deal will “improve Nigeria’s capability to meet current and future threats through operations against terrorist organisations and to counter illicit trafficking in Nigeria and the Gulf of Guinea,” without altering the regional military balance.

The agency stressed that the $346 million figure represents the highest estimated cost, with the final total subject to Nigeria’s budget, operational needs, and eventual contract terms.

In 2022, the US approved a separate $997 million sale to Nigeria that included 12 attack helicopters and precision-guided munitions.
