ABUJA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerian youth active in digital media to use their platforms responsibly, promote national unity, and guard against the dangers of misinformation.
Speaking on Friday, August 1, 2025, at the Progressives Digital Media Summit held in Abuja, President Tinubu praised the energy and creativity of the country’s new media influencers but warned that their growing influence must come with a deeper sense of responsibility.
“Your generation has recognised this moment. You are using digital tools to innovate, educate, and demand accountability. But as your influence grows, so must our collective sense of purpose and responsibility,” the president said.
He urged content creators and social media users to focus on building a better society by sharing verified information, creating employment opportunities, and producing content that uplifts rather than divides.
“Use your influence to foster unity, not division,” he added.
“Digital media is now a central driver of economic growth, civic engagement, and social change.”
President Tinubu also highlighted his administration’s support for digital innovation, citing the National Digital Innovation Fund and other startup-friendly policies as evidence of the government’s commitment to empowering the tech-savvy youth population.
Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, raised alarm over the growing use of deepfakes and AI-generated misinformation in Nigeria’s political discourse.
“Divisive content is rampant. Deepfakes and AI-generated content are increasingly used against political opponents,” Onanuga warned.
“Misinformation spreads five times faster than official corrections.”
His remarks echoed broader concerns about the chaotic nature of Nigeria’s social media space and the urgent need for digital literacy and ethical engagement online.
Also addressing the summit, Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to the President, commended the role of digital media in shaping public opinion and advancing political participation.
“You are the vanguard of a reborn Nigeria. The road may be challenging, but it is necessary,” he said.
Segun Dada, Presidential Aide on New Media and convener of the summit, stressed the importance of aligning digital engagement with national interest.
He called on influencers and strategists to be mindful of privacy violations and online behaviour that could threaten social cohesion.
“Digital media has evolved into a powerful force. Its impact must be channelled toward national good,” Dada said.
The summit, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” brought together content creators, digital strategists, and political communicators.
Discussions focused on digital responsibility, fact-checking, civic innovation, and the urgent need to combat the weaponisation of online platforms.
