Gunmen Kill 2-Week-Old Baby, 5 Others In Plateau

Unknown gunmen on Saturday, September 6, 2014 attacked Lambe Gyambar, a community in Wase local government area of Plateau state, killing 6 people one of which was a 2 weeks old baby, Premium Times reports.

On Sunday, September 7 Nuhu Musa, a resident of the community spoke to news men in Jos, the Plateau State capital about the incident.

“The attackers took us unawares,” Mr. Musa said via telephone. “We were going about our normal activities, when suddenly we began to hear sounds of gun shots from different directions of the village.”

Musa went ahead to give names of those killed as Malam Muhammad, 45; Sa’idu Bako, 60; Hafsat Hassan, 42; Fatima Musa (two weeks old); Adamu Ibrahim, 60; and Rashida Khalid, 38.

According to Musa, the undisclosed number of those who were injured in the attack are currently receiving treatment  at a private hospital in Dengi, the headquarters of a neighbouring local government, Kanam while others nwhose conditions were more severe were rushed to another unnamed hospital in neighbouring Bauchi state.

Another eye witness who spoke under anonymity said the attack occurred around 4;15 pm on Saturday, September 6, 2014, adding that apart from the deceased and others who were injured, the gunmen also torched several houses in the community, stating that several residents of the town have fled to Dengi for safety.

Both witnesses said they suspect that the attack was perpetrated by men from  neighbouring Tarok ethnic group

“The attackers are Tarok people, because we saw a familiar face among them,” Mr. Musa said. “We counted 20 houses that were burnt, the attackers also went away with some of our valuables.”

Attempts to reach Abuh Emmanuel the Plateau state police command spokesman were not responded to however a Tarok community leader, Jangle Lohbut debunked claims that his people carried out the dastardly act.

“Nothing of such act could be done by Tarok nationals,” he told journalists on phone. “As far as I’m concerned, we have a good relationship with every tribe in Wase, so there was no reason for such act from my people.”
