ABUJA, Nigeria – Tragedy struck the Kuchibiyu Community in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on Monday, January 6, 2025, when an explosion, believed to have been caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), claimed the lives of two Almajiri students and injured two others at an Islamiyyah school.

The explosion occurred around midday, sending shockwaves through the previously quiet community.

According to witnesses, one of the deceased students was seen holding the explosive device, which was wrapped in cloth, while speaking with three other students.

As the student attempted to unwrap the object, it detonated, killing him instantly and leaving the others critically injured.

One of the injured students later succumbed to injuries at Kubwa General Hospital, while the remaining two are receiving treatment and are reported to be responding positively.

Emergency Response

Emergency services, including the police bomb disposal unit, civil defense corps, and military personnel, promptly arrived at the scene to secure the area and assess the damage.

The premises have been cordoned off for investigation, and the FCT Police Command is working to determine the origin and nature of the explosive device.

Community Reaction

Residents of the Kuchibiyu community, which has been known for its peaceful environment, are in shock and fear following the incident.

Many have expressed concerns about how an explosive device ended up in the hands of children.

Mallam Abubakar Suleiman, a local leader, called for immediate action to tighten security around schools and public spaces.

“This is a sad day for us. We need to know how the explosive got into our community and ensure that such incidents never happen again,” he said.

Preliminary Investigation

Although authorities have ruled out a suicide bombing for now, they are investigating multiple possibilities: whether the device was abandoned, unknowingly transported, or indicative of a larger security threat.

The FCT Police Command has yet to release an official statement, but security officials are committed to uncovering the cause of the explosion and preventing future occurrences.

Calls for Action

The tragedy has sparked widespread calls for increased vigilance and heightened security measures around schools.

Parents and community members have urged authorities to enhance surveillance, implement stricter regulations to control explosives, and introduce community awareness programs to identify and report suspicious activities.

A Wake-Up Call

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for stakeholders to prioritize safety in educational environments.

Enhanced intelligence gathering, disaster preparedness, and security patrols are essential to protect vulnerable communities.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on preventing a recurrence of such a devastating event and ensuring that schools remain safe spaces for learning and growth.
