32-Year-Old Man Commits Suicide Following Jungle Justice Over N1,000 Theft In Ebonyi

Must read

Simon Mbam, from Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State over the weekend committed suicide after he was found to have stolen N1,000 from a shop where he had gone to have drinks with friends.

Vanguard reports that Mbam, 33, had been drinking at the said shop when the shopkeeper raised an alarm over his missing N1,000 with no customer owning up to the crime. The alarm attracted other villagers who thronged the shop, demanding that the money be returned by the following day or face the consequences.

The N1,000 was later found at the entrance of the shop, but the villagers and shopkeeper insisted on finding out who exactly had taken the money after which Mbam confessed to the crime.

The suspect was said to have been beaten up and fined two goats, two crates of beer and N5,000 cash which were readily presented by the suspect’s mother. The village head reportedly rejected the items brought, saying an additional N5,000 be brought or the matter would be reported to the police.

This new demand was said to have humiliated the suspect, who broke away from the villagers and jumped and drowned in Aku pond which is said to be a short distance from village square.

The matter was reported to the police by the suspect’s mother, after which the police arrested the village head with three others.
