What is PAN D made up of?

Made with Alkem, Pantoprazole + Domperidone, Pan D mainly consists of Pantoprazole which is a pump inhibitor for protons. It helps in decreasing the amount of acid which the stomach produces. Hence, Pan D is mainly used in treating stomach disorders- especially in countering the acidity.

In most cases, it is also used for the treatment of erosive esophagitis and in countering GERD which is also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease. It can be consumed by children who have crossed the age of five years and is mainly prescribed for adults. It can be given for a duration of a day to up to eight weeks at a time. Pan D heals your esophagus and the treatment is quite preferred across the nation by patients.

Although rarely, but it can also be used as a source of medication for Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and basically in countering any treatment which involves stomach acid in excess.

What are the common side effects of Pan D?

While Pan D does not have a lot of side effects and most people take it pretty well without reporting any side effects. But in some cases, when there is sensitivity, the patient may suffer through the following side effects:

  • Diarrhea

    Diarrhoea is a condition where the patient suffers through frequent bowel movement and the feces are excreted in liquid form.

  • Nausea

    Nausea can be caused by many reasons such as a bad stomach, fever, headache, low blood sugar but is mainly a predecessor to stomach pain.

  • Vomiting

    When waste is eliminated through the food pipe and comes out of the mouth with a feeling of discomfort, the process is referred to as vomiting.

  • Constipation

    Constipation is caused when there is a lot of difficulty in eliminating the waste products from the normal process of excretion and waste is gathered in the stomach.

  • Rash

    A rash is an unusual appearance on the skin which is usually itchy in nature and may appear to be red.

  • Headaches

    When there is a discomfort in the head characterized by pain, then it is a headache. Sometimes it can be caused by acidity too.

  • Stomach Pain

  • Gas

    Gas in the body can be caused due to two reasons- one is swallowing the air when a person drinks or eats which can cause nitrogen or oxygen to gather inside the digestive tract or due to digestive gases being formed. Gases such as Co2, methane, and hydrogen may form in the system during the digestion process.

  • Joint Pain

  • The patient may also sometimes feel extreme sensitivity towards sunlight and feel dizziness in few cases.

Rare Side Effects of Pan D

While the aforementioned side effects may occur commonly, the side effects mentioned below occur quite rarely. Some rare side effects that the patients may experience are:

  • Nervousness

    Nervous breakdown may occur for some patients and can be caused due to various other underlying causes as well. However, it is a very rare effect of Pan D and does not occur for a lot of patients.

  • Abnormal heartbeat

    If you feel the heartbeat is being too fast or too slow, then you need to visit the emergency section of the hospital immediately. The normal rate for the heartbeat is between 60 to 100. Anything above this when you are not exercising is not considered normal.

  • Muscle pain

    If the muscles of your body are paining and there is discomfort in the muscles, then it may be a rare side effect of Pan D.

  • Weakness

    If your body is feeling weaker than usual after taking this medicine, then it is advisable to consult the doctor.

  • Leg cramps

    If there is a feeling of weakness and a sensation in your legs, then it may be a side effect.

  • Water retention

    Keep checking your weight as it can reflect whether you are suffering through water retention or not. Additionally, if your feet, ankles, and calves are swollen- then it may be because of water retention too.

Some other side effects which are extremely rare include:

  • Pancreatitis

    Pancreas are a gland present in the lower part of the body which is responsible for a lot of functions in the body. However, pancreatitis occurs when there is an inflammation of the pancreas.

  • Reduced levels of blood cells

    This can only be done with proper diagnosis and the blood cells need to be diagnosed through a blood test to confirm this particular condition.

  • Muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis)

    Muscle breakdown is an extremely rare occurrence and requires immediate medical intervention to be treated.

  • Liver damage
    In very rare cases, the patient may also suffer through damage to the liver.

  • Side Effects to the Nervous system

Up to 26.4% of the patients suffer through a headache and some may experience taste pervasion too. Some other common side effects include bitter taste or a metallic feel along with dizziness and taste disorders in very rare cases. Very few people also experience paresthesia and vertigo while the most common age group reported for this particular disorder is between two to sixteen years of age.

  • Side effects caused to the Respiratory system

    Pan D causes side effects to the respiratory system of more than 10% of patients who consume it. Around 13.6% of these patients suffer through Nasopharyngitis while 13.2% may experience pharyngolaryngeal pain. Additionally, most of them experience nasal congestion, pharyngitis and even a lot of cough. Very few people with respiratory side effects experience a change in the way their sense of smell is or suffer through dyspnea. Some patients may also suffer through infections in the upper respiratory system and pediatric patients between the age of 2 to 16 experience these symptoms the most.

  • Side effects caused to the Gastrointestinal system

    While this is rare, but if Pan D is combined with therapy where metronidazole, tetracycline, and bismuth are included too- then the patient may suffer through diarrhea too. Additionally, the patients may also suffer through nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and even dry mouth. Constipation was also reported by some patients along with fecal and tongue discoloration. Some of the patients may experience loose stools and flatulence as well. Very uncommon side effects on the gastrointestinal system include distention, oral moniliasis, bloating and even dyspepsia. Rectal disorder, colon polyp, and increased saliva are extremely rare symptoms occurring for patients having Pan D.   1. Psychiatric Side effects caused

    These particular side effects occur rarely and are caused mainly by patients who have preexisting conditions. Some of the most common side effects include depressions, disorientation, confusion and even hallucinations. For around 10% of patients, depression may occur and for some patients, sleep disorders may occur too. Very rarely, patients experience disorientation and anxiety. Some patients may also suffer through severe damage which is hepatocellular in nature. It may lead to jaundice or even hepatic failture in extremely rare cases. Some patients may also experience an increased bilirubin and very rarely hepatitis may occur too.

  2. Cardiovascular effects

    Some of the common side effects include chest pain or even substernal chest pain. In case there is an aggravation of the cardiovascular side effects, then the patient may experience peripheral edema, thrombophlebitis, especially at the injection site. In very rare cases, the patient may experience the collapse of the circulatory system and even experience extremely hot flushes. Not a lot of patients have reported generalized edema but it may occur too.
