[dropcap]D[/dropcap]iscrimination isn’t something that can be ignored.  Not only is it possible in any workplace, but it can also lead to large consequences that can be a nightmare for employees and employers alike.  

These are the top five ways management can prevent workplace discrimination and why it’s important to do.

Train Thoroughly And Often

Training is one of the best ways to prevent workplace discrimination because it gives your employees the power to stop it before it begins.  Training starts at hiring and should continue annually.  

In training, discuss what discrimination is, who it affects, and how we should react if we see it.  Make it clear that your company doesn’t tolerate this behavior and that if it’s noticed, it should be brought to a supervisor or human resources as soon as possible.

After their initial thorough training, the company should check in with them once or twice a year to ensure that they still understand what they were trained on and ask if they’ve noticed any discrimination.

Encourage Bias Examination

Biases are an unfortunately natural part of any human experience.  We shouldn’t let these control who we hire or surround ourselves with.  Encourage those in hiring and supervising roles to examine the biases they may not realize they have. 

These roles have to be as unbiased as possible, so if an employee doesn’t understand what they lean towards, it can end in them mistreating their coworkers without thinking about it.  Economic consulting firms can discuss this with your business if there’s any confusion.

Thoroughly Advertise When Hiring

When your company is hiring, ensure that the advertisement for your business is broadcast on as many sites as possible.  This will ensure that as many types of people as possible can apply and find work with the company.  If you don’t have a diverse number of applicants, it’ll be harder to hire various employees.

Pay and Promote Fairly

When it’s time to decide on the pay and roles of employees, it’s important to ensure that it’s completely without any biases.  Which employees have been reaching their numbers better?  Which puts in the effort the company likes to see?  Ensure that any biases like race, gender, sexuality, age, or religion are completely ignored.

You want to guarantee that all your employees have a fair chance and aren’t overlooked for something they can’t help.

Listen To Employee Complaints

If an employee comes forward and says that they’ve experienced something in the workplace:  it’s important to talk to them about what they’ve experienced.  Listen to everything they say, take thorough notes, and ensure that you don’t speak over them.  

Ask questions to find out as much about the situation as possible, and then talk to others who work with them.  Although you should always listen to victims first, sometimes their stories can be better understood when given context and support from those around them.  

Ensure that you turn around and follow through with punishment for perpetrators.  Nobody wants to work in an unsafe environment, and if it’s not made clear that this behavior won’t be tolerated, more people will think they can get away with it.
