Shell Confirms ‘Signs Of A Leak’ In Forcados 48 Pipeline Following Avengers Attack

Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd on Friday, June 3, 2016 confirmed signs of a leak in the 48 inch Forcados export pipeline at a location between shoreline and the Forcados terminal in Delta State.

Its statement was made after a reported attack on the pipeline in the early hours of Friday.

“We are yet to fully evaluate the potential impact and damage to the pipeline resulting from this latest incident. We have however mobilized appropriate oil spill response measures,” Shell said in a statement.

Given this latest incident and the wider security situation in the Niger Delta, Shell said it was unable to determine the probable timing of the resumption of exports from the Forcados terminal.

Shell’s Forcados crude oil has been under force majeure since February.

The Avengers Strike Shell Pipeline And Brass To Tebidaba Crude Line

The Niger Delta Avengers militant group claimed responsibility for recent attacks on Nigeria’s oil infrastructure, promising to cut production to zero.

The Niger Delta Avengers has claimed responsibility for attacks on two oil pipelines – Shell’s Forcado 48 exportline and the Brass to Tebidaba Crude Oil Line in Bayelsa.

According to the group, the attack on Shell occurred at 3.00 am on Friday, June 3, 2016 while the Bayelsa pipeline attack occurred 30 minutes later. The Niger Delta Avengers says that oil giant, Shell refused to heed its warning to stop repair work on its Forcados facility.

“At 3:00 am today @NDAvengers blow up the SPDC forcados 48″ Exportline. We warned SPDC not to go ahead with repair works but they refuse,” the group announced micro-blogging website, Twitter.

“At about 3:30am our (@NDAvengers ) strike team Blow up the Brass to Tebidaba Crude oil line in Bayelsa.. .”

Niger Delta Avengers is a new militancy group that is operating in the oil-rich region of Southern Nigeria.

The militants say they are waging a war for a free Niger Delta Republic in what it tags, Operation Red Economy, with a view of halting crude oil production in Nigeria to force the government to grant the group’s demands.
