Father Of Chimamanda Adichie Released By Abductors, Family Issues Statement

The father of renowned and award-winning author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Professor James Nwoye Adichie, has been released after being captured by abductors on Saturday May 2, 2015 on his way from Nsukka to his hometown in Abba, Ananbra State at about 10:00am that day.

The kidnappers who abducted Prof. Adichie and his driver allegedly made an initial demand of 50 million naira for their release, the ransom was later reduced by the kidnappers before they were prevailed upon to release the renowned professor.

According to a report by Olisa.TV, Professor Adichie was released at about 8pm on the night of Wednesday, May 6, 2015. The family has now released a statement on the incident.

The Adichie family confirms that Professor James Nwoye Adichie, father of writer Chimamanda Adichie, was abducted on Saturday, May 2, 2015, while travelling by road from Nsukka to their hometown, Abba, in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He was released back to his family yesterday night, Tuesday May 5, 2015.

Professor Adichie, who is 83 years old, is Nigeria’s first professor of statistics, and a dedicated university teacher of more than fifty years.

The family wishes to thank the friends, well-wishers and agencies that provided their assistance and support.

The experience has been traumatic for the whole family and they ask that their privacy please be respected during this difficult period.
