Ebola: Liberian Families Giving Bribe To Keep Their Ebola Corpse

Liberia has remained unconcerned as regards the sensitization to stay alive and follow every safe regulation to avoid the Virus. Saddening update from Liberia has it that victims’ families are paying Ebola corpse retrieval team huge sum of money to allow them pick up their deceased Ebola victims and give them traditional burial

The virus is known to be more infectious in a dead body through exposure to bodily fluids, and there is no known cure at the moment.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that certificates are being issued to family members often still grieving as the retrieval teams arrive finding every means to ensure that the corpse in not taken away.

Vincent Chounse, a community outreach worker from Monrovia reported a case where a family says their corpse was not an Ebola patient, and the retrieval team pull them away from the other people.

‘Then they say: “We can give you a certificate from the Ministry of Health that it wasn’t Ebola”.’

The price of the certificate ranges between $40 and $150, and all they needed to do was to pay for it as Health workers issue fake certificate to cover for the corpse

The Liberian Government however  acknowledged that there had been reports of retrieval teams who issue fake death certificates to people and has warn them against such act, noting that these people are aware of the danger involve in touching a dead Ebola victim.

Meanwhile, Liberian health workers have reported fully for duty at hospitals and care homes, as against the call for a strike which can further hamper the country’s ability to contain the epidemic.
