Fall from Grace: High Court Upholds Former PDP National Chairman Ayu’s Suspension

Must read

MAKURDI, Nigeria — A Benue State High Court on Friday, June 2, 2023, has upheld the suspension of former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Iyorchia Ayu, marking a significant setback for the veteran politician.

In March, Ayu was suspended by his local party executive committee in the Nyorov council ward due to unpaid dues, bringing a sudden halt to his tenure as PDP National Chairman.

The ward executive committee additionally accused Ayu of engaging in anti-party activities, leading them to pass a vote of no confidence against him.

At the time of the suspension, Vanger Dooyum, the Secretary of the party in Igyorov ward, stated that Ayu’s alleged anti-party actions, along with those of his allies, were responsible for the PDP’s defeat in his ward and local government in the recent gubernatorial elections.

Ayu was also accused of failing to cast his vote during the governorship and state assembly elections held on March 18, 2023.

According to the ward executive committee, many of Ayu’s closest allies sided with the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC), leading to the poor performance of the PDP in Igyorov Ward.

The suspension was endorsed by twelve out of seventeen executive committee members. The upholding of this suspension by the Benue State High Court underscores the challenges the PDP faces as it grapples with internal divisions and external competition.
