AGBOR, Nigeria — Two sisters studying at the College of Education, Agbor, have died in a midnight fire that swept through their private hostel near the institution on Tuesday.
The victims, identified as Favour and Ndidi from Obiaruku in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State, were trapped in their room when the blaze broke out.
An eyewitness said the fire erupted while the siblings were asleep.
“The unfortunate incident occurred while they were sleeping in the hostel. The fire started at about midnight unknown to neighbours that the two girls were in their rooms,” the witness recounted.
The cause of the fire was not immediately established.
Emergency services were called, but firefighters arrived after the damage had been done.
The sisters’ bodies were taken to the Central Hospital, Agbor.
The tragedy highlights continuing concerns about fire incidents in the state.
Dr. Tony Nwaka, Commissioner at the Bureau for Special Duties, noted in his mid-term report last year that 90 lives and property worth more than N7 billion had been lost to fire incidents in the past six years, though he said property valued at N65 billion had been saved through firefighting efforts.
