The decision of Aisha Buhari, wife of the Nigerian president, to file a legal action against Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti State, has been generating controversy based on the fact that Fayose enjoys immunity.

The president’s wife sued the governor after he refused to retract his allegations that she was indicted in the Halliburton scam.

She had initially given Fayose a five-day ultimatum to apologise, but the governor stood his grounds, insisting that he had evidence to substantiate his claim.

He even challenged her to visit the US if she was sure that she was not afraid of being arrested.

Buhari’s wife is currently in the country, where she is expected to spend a full week.

Commenting on the legal battle with Fayose during an interview with VOA, the president’s wife said she had the right to take him to court because her office is higher than that of the governor.

“I never chose myself for this post, but God chose it for me… I took him (Fayose) to court because my seat supersedes his,” she said.

“I have never abused him; I don’t even know him as a person. How can he be accusing me of what I have no idea of? I won’t let this go.”

Tracing the origin of the issue to the electioneering period, the president’s wife said it was not only Fayose who was abusing her, but added that while others “kept quiet” after the election, the governor continued.

She said it was God who made it possible for her husband to win the election.

“All these started during the campaign period. He was not the only who was abusing me, others did that, but after the election, which Allah made us to win, and they to lose, everybody kept quiet, but Fayose kept on abusing people and eventually he started abusing me too,” she said.

“I don’t know those places and people he mentioned.”

  1. It is unfortunate that a beautiful woman, like Mrs. Aisha Buhari should get herself involved into the kind of dirty politics played in Nigeria. I advise her not to, as an enlightened woman. She should only involve herself in agenda that will benefit the poor masses of the country, especially women and children.
Mrs. Buhari made a comment that her “Office is Higher Than Governors.”

That is not correct. She has an office by virtue of being the wife of a sitting President.
Governors are elected officials, though some are appointed and some are “rigged” into office, but the wife
of a President or Governor has an office because of her husband’s position.

Mrs. Michelle Obama, Mrs. Beatrice Blair, Mr. Markel of Germany, husband to Angela Markel, the wives to Canadian, Australian, French, etc., never sued any one, irrespective of what people say against them, because
as a politician, or a politician’s wife, you are prone to criticism.
Also, with the dirty politics played in Nigeria between opposing parties, the wives of the Presidents and Governors should learn how to absorb insults and criticisms; therefore, I advise that she, Aisha Buhari withdraw her case against Ayodele Fayose, Governor of Ekiti State.

    • I EXPECT THE WRITERS TO CALL THOSE ACCUSING HER TO ORDER ESPECIALLY NOW THAT SHE HAS
TRAVELLED TO US WITHOUT ANYONE ARRESTING HER. LET US ALSO LEARN HOW TO RESPECT OUR
FIRST FAMILIES. I REMEMBER A LADY WHO TALKED NEGATIVELY ABOUT OBAMA’S DAUGHTER, SHE WAS
ASKED TO APOLOGISE TO THE 1ST FAMILY WHICH SHE DID. THIS ISSUE IS SUCH A SENSITIVE ISSUE THAT
HAS TO DO WITH SOMEONES IMAGE BOTH HERE IN NIGERIA AND THE WORLD. 1ST LADY OF A COUNTRY
IS NOT JUST COMMON AND SHOULD NEVER BE ACCUSED OF WHAT SHE KNEW NOT. IT IS PAINFUL WHEN YOU ACCUSE AN INNOCENT PERSON OF WHAT HE OR SHE DID NOT DO.

  2. I sorry for her. I advice to be very careful because if she feels the husband’s power is pushing her, she shld remember that her husband is of age and she is still very young. What will happen to her when the husband, Buhai finally go to join his found fathers?

  3. There is no need to glorify every accusation thrown at you with an answer when you are a public figure. No one throws Stone up to a barren mango tree. If they throws stone at you give them the fruit of love and patience, that is enough scorn to them.

  4. I thought the president once said there will be no office of the first lady?

What is she claiming here? Misplaced priorities!

  5. She is the President’s wife. There is no such position as “First Lady” in the extant Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended). Her husband, the President, occupies an office which is more powerful than that of a State Governor. But the wife of the President has no office at all – higher or lower than that of a State Governor. Perhaps she may be referring to the all-important office to which everyone defers, I.e, the kitchen. Otherwise Madam no get office at all.

  6. A yodel Fayose sharound the world only give puld have apologised to the first lady. She’s allowed though to sue him for libel. But I don’t see any point in comparison of offices superiority. Madam should address Fayose’s case in court and avoid any utterance that may backlash on her and family.
Some politicians are irresponsible and they have no integrity so I will advise people who hsve names to protect not to enter into cheap politicking with them.
Meanwhile no politicians must be given pension in Nigeria except CinC
