Photos of a male Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, cutting off the hair of junior female officers have emerged online causing outrage among Nigerians.
The photos, which emerged on Monday, April 10, 2017, show Andrew Kumapayi, the sector commander of the Rivers State Command of the FRSC, using a pair of scissors to crudely cut off the hair of some of his female corps members.
The disturbing incident is said to have happened during the Monday morning parade. Kumapayi is said to have conducted an inspection of the “guard” and declared that their hairstyles “went beyond the women’s collars” as such violated an FRSC dress code rule.
According to reports, the Rivers State FRSC commander also inspected the fingernails of the officers on the parade ground that morning.
At the end of the exercise, the “offending” female officers were lined up and given the “punishment” of having their hair and weavons cut off.
Boboye Oyeyemi, the corps marshal of the FRSC, has reportedly condemned the cutting off of the hair of female officers by his subordinate.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the FRSC, Bisi Kazeem, said that the agency of aware of the incident and the corps marshal had “already ordered an investigation into the issue”.
Kazeem explained that the action of Mr. Kumapayi was driven by the dress code of the federal agency which “forbids female officials from wearing long hair”, he however, condemned the actions of the commander.
He also said that he would not comment further because it is a “developing story” and he would inform the public on the outcome of the investigations.
