India Beats Nigeria to 2030 Commonwealth Games Hosting Rights

Must read

LONDON, England — India has been selected ahead of Nigeria to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a major milestone for the South Asian nation as it prepares to stage one of the largest sporting events in its history.

In a statement on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, the executive board of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) confirmed that it will recommend Ahmedabad, India, as the host city for the centenary edition of the Games.

The final decision will be ratified by the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow on Wednesday, November 26, 2025.

“Amdavad’s proposal emphasises India’s commitment to the values of the Commonwealth and its capacity to stage a Games that reflects the scale and diversity of modern sport,” the statement read.

“The recommendation represents a landmark moment for the Commonwealth Sport Movement. The 2030 Games will mark the centenary of the inaugural event held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930. With Glasgow 2026 fast approaching and promising to deliver a ‘wow factor’ for athletes and fans alike, today’s recommendation provides an exciting platform for the Centenary Games and beyond, offering long-term stability and momentum.”

Nigeria had been a strong contender to host the Games, with Abuja proposed as the host city — a move that would have made it the first African country to stage the event.

The country’s proposal was widely praised for its vision and inclusivity.

The Commonwealth board described Nigeria’s submission as “impressive and ambitious,” acknowledging its potential to advance the Games’ reach on the continent.

“We will develop a strategy for supporting and accelerating Nigeria’s hosting ambitions for future Games, including consideration for 2034,” the CGF board said.

President Bola Tinubu had championed Nigeria’s bid, calling it a national aspiration and an opportunity to showcase Africa’s capacity to deliver a global sporting spectacle.

In a statement earlier this year, Tinubu described the bid as a “dream” for the country and a chance to send “a powerful message” about Nigeria’s readiness to take its place on the world stage.

Sports ministry officials had expressed confidence that Abuja’s growing infrastructure, coupled with Nigeria’s rich sporting culture, positioned the country favourably against rival bids.

However, India’s proposal — backed by substantial financial guarantees and a detailed infrastructure plan anchored around the Narendra Modi Stadium and a new multi-sport village in Ahmedabad — ultimately tipped the balance.

The 2030 Games will be India’s second time hosting the event, following the 2010 edition in New Delhi.

The upcoming Games are expected to symbolise both the centenary of the Commonwealth Games and India’s emergence as a major player in global sports.
