Former Super Eagles winger Garba Lawal on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 had advised the nation’s soccer governing body, Nigerian Football Federation, (NFF) to stop wasting funds on the invitation of the country’s foreign based players.
Lawal said rather than look in the direction of Europe, the NFF should concentrate on the home lads insisting that that is the only way to rebuild the Eagles for the task ahead.
The Atlanta 96 Olympic gold medalist stated that if well motivated, the home lads will not only qualify the country for the AFCON 2017 Nations Cup but go there to re-enact the South Africa 2013 feat.
Lawal who spoke to AfricanFootball.com declared: “Inviting foreign-based players is a waste of money.
“We invite them, pay their air ticket refund, pay them allowances and what do they give us? Nothing. No result.
“I think it’s better we concentrate on the players in the local league because we have a lot of talent in the league who would deliver for us if they were given the chance.”
He added: “Most of the foreign players we invite, if they are not warming the bench, they are playing in some obscure league. So for me I think it’s better we stop inviting foreign-based players because they have not shown us the winning character.”
