Unknown hackers on Friday, May 8, 2015 placed pornographic images of children on concentration camp memorial website on the 70th anniversary of the Nazi’s defeat.

The website of the Mauthausen memorial website was up again when the images were replaced, with the site operators stating that an investigation had begun into the attack on the former concentration camp in western Austria had started.

A statement from the operators read: “Much to our regret we must inform you that the website of the Mauthausen memorial has been hacked with a child pornography context.

“The company in charge of our website has deactivated it immediately.

“The Federal Ministry of the Interior condemns the attack on the website of the Mauthausen Memorial and has initiated investigations.”

Shell-shocked by the attack, Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner said: “Interior ministry experts are helping the private operator of the website as we speak to get the site back up as soon as possible. At the same time an investigation is under way.”
