Man, 22, Jailed 2 Months For Stealing Bicycle In Abuja

Mustapha Abubakar, 22, is to spend two months in prison for stealing a bicycle in Abuja.  He was sentenced by an Abuja Grade 1 Area Court for being in possession of the bicycle suspected to have been stolen.

Daily Trust reports that Mustapha Abubakar, of no fixed address, was convicted under Section 319A of the Penal Code.

The prosecutor, Abba Zurumi, told the court that the accused, on April 18, was found with a bicycle, suspected to be stolen, which he could not give satisfactory account of how he got it.

When the charge was read to the accused person, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two months imprisonment by the judge, Mohammed Marafa, with an option to pay N15,000 fine.

In another case, a middle-aged man was arraigned before the same court for allegedly receiving a vehicle suspected to be stolen.

Joseph Eze of Kaduna was charged under Section 317 of the Penal Code.

The prosecutor, Abba Zurumi, told the court that the accused on February 2, 2016, received a Mazda 636 model car valued at N500,000, from one Stephen Benjamin, which he knew was stolen.

He said the car belonged to one Wale Oni, but the accused paid the sum of N45,000 to Stephen, dismantled and removed the vital parts of the car for the purpose of selling them.

When the charge was read to the accused person, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail by the judge, Mohammed Marafa, with a reasonable surety who must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction.

The case was adjourned to July 22 for hearing.
