The Cross River State Police Command has arrested one King Akpanke, 41, for allegedly killing his stepmother’s lover for having sex with her in his late father’s house.
The state Commissioner of Police, CP, Mr. Henry Fadairo, at the Command headquarters in Calabar on Wednesday, February 10, 2016 paraded the suspect alongside 14 others suspected to be cultists belonging to a dreaded group identified as ‘Skylo.’
The CP who briefed journalists on the success of the command, said the 14 suspects were arrested on January 29, 2016, following a tip-off that revealed they converged at a primary school on Howell Street in Calabar-South.
He said, “On January 29, 2016, we got a tip-off from concerned residents that members of a notorious cult called Skylo were meeting in a primary school on Howell Street.
“Our men from the Efut Police Division and Operation Skolombo immediately swung into action and arrested 14 members of the cult.
“One of them, a wanted criminal in connection with a murder case, was also arrested.
“Also on January 18, the command recovered two locally-made pistols, six cartridges, four handsets and a driving licence from suspected criminals.
“In the period under review, the command also recovered a stolen vehicle belonging to one Egeh at the Etung Local Government Area,” he added.
Meanwhile, confessing to his crime, Akpanke said he acted in self-defence.
On the incident leading to the death of his stepmother’s lover whose identity was not disclosed, Akpanke told newsmen that before the incident, he had on several occasion warned the deceased against coming to his late father’s house to have sex with his stepmother.
“On that day, he came to my house around 9am to abuse me. There was nobody in the house. The house belongs to my late father and I am the third son.
“So, when he started abusing me, we fought. He brought a stick, but I went inside and took a knife and stabbed him in the head.
“I later discovered that he had died. It was a mistake. The young man was having regular sex with my late father’s wife.
“I warned him several times to stay off the house, but he refused. He was always in our house to have sex with her. He called me all sorts of names. He planned to kill me,” the 41-year-old suspect added.
