According to BBC reports, the man, Carl Wheatley, was found guilty of murder by the jury at St. Albans Crown Court in Hertfordshire. He had beaten his four year old daughter to death in March 2014, the child was found to have had 66 injuries that included a bruise from her stomach to her ankles.

Wheatley was told he would serve a minimum of 21 years before being considered for parole.

Wheatley got custody of Alexa-Marie in December 2013 – three months before he killed her. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter but the jury rejected his not guilty plea to murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

The jury was told that he beat Alexa-Marie after he had lost his temper with “hard, sustained, persistent hitting.”

The blows caused fat deposits to enter her blood stream there by blocking her lungs because of the force with which they were delivered. The injuries were described as the culmination of beating over several weeks.

Her body was found by the police on March 12 2014 and a pathologist said she died from “extreme blunt-force trauma”.

The jury was told that psychiatrists had diagnosed Wheatley with multiple mental health disorders. According to prosecutor Christopher Donnellan, as at when Wheatley called the emergency response team and when the paramedics arrived, it was likely Alexa-Marie had been dead for hours.

Adrian Foster, from the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “Without any eyewitnesses, we needed lengthy and highly technical evidence from top medical experts to help provide an explanation as to why this little girl died.”

Alexa-Marie was removed from her mother’s care some years earlier and was living with foster parents in Bedfordshire before custody was granted to her father.

The unidentified mother of the child issued a statement via Hertfordshire Police which said: “Myself and my extended family have been deeply traumatised by what Carl Wheatley has done. How anyone could cause such pain and suffering to someone so young and so sweet is truly beyond me.

“She will never have the chance to make daisy chains or go to a school prom and we will never be able to celebrate happy occasions, such as birthdays, Christmas and Mother’s Day, because of what this man has done.”
