JERUSALEM, Israel — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced the dissolution of the war cabinet and the establishment of a new one, following the departure of former Defense Minister Benny Gantz from the emergency government.
The decision, made during a political-security cabinet meeting, is seen as a response to the void left by Gantz’s resignation.
Gantz, leader of a more moderate faction, resigned on June 9, citing fundamental differences in strategic approach and accusing Netanyahu of hindering the achievement of “true victory” in the war on Gaza.
His departure has prompted Netanyahu’s far-right coalition allies, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, to push for the formation of a new war cabinet composed of coalition party leaders.
In a social media post, Netanyahu addressed Gantz’s resignation, stating that now is not the time to abandon the war effort.
He emphasised that the country is in an existential war on several fronts and reiterated that his door remains open to any Zionist party willing to join forces in achieving victory over Israel’s enemies.
The establishment of a new war cabinet is perceived as a move to consolidate power and ensure a more unified approach to the ongoing conflict with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
However, the impact of this political shift on the war and the broader Israeli political landscape remains uncertain.
Netanyahu’s government has faced criticism from opposition parties and segments of the public over its handling of the conflict.
Critics have called for a more decisive victory over Hamas and expressed concerns about the conflict’s impact on Israeli citizens.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation as it continues to evolve.
