Must read

One person has been missing following a boat accident on Monday, June 16, 2014  around Tincan Island, Apapa.

The missing person, feared dead was among 10 passengers on-board the boat ferrying them from Tin Can Island to Coconut Island.

According to the Punch, the accident was caused by tidal waves generated by four bigger boats which affected its stability.

The spokesperson of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), South West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye who confirmed the incident said panic from the passengers also contributed to the accident as it made the boat difficult for the operator to control.

The panicking passengers who fell into the water were rescued because they were wearing their life jacket and only the victim’s life jacket was found floating probably because he did not fasten it properly.

He urged those people using water as a means of transport to be safety conscious and stay calm, and when faced with similar challenges should give boat operators room to do their job.
